Before & After Care

Your IPL Photofacial Care Guide

Pre-Treatment

  • Avoid all sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment, as sun exposure increases the risk of complications.
  • Discontinue sun-sensitizing antibiotics such as doxycycline, Bactrim, and Levaquin for 1 week before treatment.
  • Do not use Accutane for at least 6 months prior to treatment.
  • Avoid Botox or filler injections for at least 2 weeks before IPL.
  • Discontinue topical retinols/retinoids, chemical or enzyme peels, exfoliants, topical antibiotics, exfoliating masks, hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, acne products, and AHA/BHA acids for 7 days before treatment.
  • If you have a history of cold sores in the treatment area, begin antiviral medication 48 hours prior to treatment as recommended by your provider.

Day of Treatment

  • Your skin may feel warm or hot immediately after treatment—this is normal.
Cold compresses (not ice) may be used to cool the skin.
  • Post-laser enzyme gel or moisturizer and SPF will be applied before leaving the treatment room.
  • Once cooled, the skin may continue to feel like a mild sunburn for up to 2 hours.
  • Tylenol or ibuprofen may be taken for discomfort.
  • Mild swelling is possible and typically resolves within 24–72 hours.
