Pre-Treatment
- Avoid all sun exposure, tanning beds, and self-tanner for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment, as sun exposure increases the risk of complications.
- Discontinue sun-sensitizing antibiotics such as doxycycline, Bactrim, and Levaquin for 1 week before treatment.
- Do not use Accutane for at least 6 months prior to treatment.
- Avoid Botox or filler injections for at least 2 weeks before IPL.
- Discontinue topical retinols/retinoids, chemical or enzyme peels, exfoliants, topical antibiotics, exfoliating masks, hydroquinone, benzoyl peroxide, acne products, and AHA/BHA acids for 7 days before treatment.
- If you have a history of cold sores in the treatment area, begin antiviral medication 48 hours prior to treatment as recommended by your provider.
Day of Treatment
- Your skin may feel warm or hot immediately after treatment—this is normal.
Cold compresses (not ice) may be used to cool the skin. - Post-laser enzyme gel or moisturizer and SPF will be applied before leaving the treatment room.
- Once cooled, the skin may continue to feel like a mild sunburn for up to 2 hours.
- Tylenol or ibuprofen may be taken for discomfort.
- Mild swelling is possible and typically resolves within 24–72 hours.
Post-Treatment
General Care
- Your skin may feel warm, tight, or sunburned after treatment—this is normal.
- Apply cool compresses (not ice) to reduce heat or swelling.
- Tylenol or ibuprofen may be used to relieve discomfort.
- Treated pigmentation will darken before flaking off.
Do not pick or scratch to avoid scarring. - Apply SPF 30+ daily throughout the healing period (and beyond).
- Avoid abrasive devices and exfoliating products during healing.
First 48 Hours
- Expect mild redness, swelling, or sensitivity—usually resolving within 24–72 hours.
- Avoid hot showers, strenuous exercise, and excessive heat.
- Wash and moisturize the treated area twice daily with gentle products.
- Avoid active skincare products (retinol, acids, benzoyl peroxide, etc.).
Days 3 to 7
- Continue gentle washing, moisturizing, and applying SPF.
- Reapply sunscreen every 2 hours during sun exposure.
- Treated brown spots may darken and flake—allow this to happen naturally.
- Continue avoiding active or irritating skincare ingredients.
First 7 to 10 Days
Do not use:
- Retinol or Vitamin A products
- Hydroquinone
- AHAs (glycolic, lactic) or BHAs (salicylic acid)
- Benzoyl peroxide or low-pH Vitamin C
- Spin brushes or exfoliating devices
