What is Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)?
Platelet rich plasma, or PRP, is a component of blood that contains proteins, including growth factors and cytokines. These proteins help to build collagen and increase cell reproduction.
How Do PRP Injections Work?
PRP can be injected under the skin of the scalp, face, neck, and hands or applied topically during facial treatments like microneedling. Studies show that when injected into the scalp, PRP can promote hair growth, thicken hair, and strengthen the hair follicle. Blood is drawn and spun down in a device called a centrifuge which separates the plasma from the whole blood. The plasma is then applied to the skin or injected into the treatment area.
When used in facial treatments like microneedling, PRP treatments promote collagen production — which improves skin tone and texture — and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This treatment, often called the Vampire facial, can be a good alternative for anti-aging and wrinkle reduction in people who prefer not to use dermal fillers or Botox injections. Serums made from products like Hyaluronic acid and Botox can be added to PRP during microneedling treatments to hydrate and tighten the skin, further enhancing the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.
PRP Hair Treatments
PRP can also be injected into the scalp as a treatment for hair loss. Studies have shown that a series of PRP injections to the scalp over a period of several months can increase the amount of hair, thicken hair, and strengthen the hair follicle.
