72 Days Spent Shaving

I started shaving when I was 11 years old. I’m 44 now, so that’s a lot of time shaving. Crazy when you think about it. Most women will spend approximately 72 days in their lifetime just shaving their legs.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve had different experiences with shaving over the years. I can remember days of smooth, perfect skin, and days where I was left with bleeding, burning, razor bumps, and skin irritation. I remember thinking that shaving was my only option and dealing with the monotonous task of shaving almost my entire body to avoid dealing with daily stubble. After years of suffering the inconvenience, I decided to search for a better solution. Something more permanent. Something less time consuming. Something less irritating to my skin.

First I tried waxing. I couldn’t believe how terribly painful it was. I had my bikini area done and was left with severe bruising and pain along my inner thigh. Not to mention the cost at $65 per session. The Aesthetician that I was seeing at the time recommended monthly visits, so over the course of a year that would have added up to $780 annually. In my opinion, not worth the pain, bruising, or the cost.

Next, I moved onto an epilator. It was economical. I bought it on amazon for $24.99, but it was extremely painful and left my skin irritated and red after each use.

I consulted with my dermatologist who recommended trying threading. She thought that it would be less irritating to the skin because it didn’t involve the heat of waxing or pulling of hair like an epilator. I looked into it, but again, it was expensive and required monthly visits.

I started talking to friends who recommended laser hair removal. Most had been doing treatments at a local laser spa near our home. They said that it was the best thing that had ever happened to them. That they hadn’t shaved in more than a year. That they were thrilled because they had no more stubble, razor bumps, burning, skin irritation, or redness. They said that it was a little expensive up front, but gave long lasting results. When I compared it with the cost of other hair removal treatments over time it was actually less expensive. I was sold!

I began visiting the same local laser hair removal practice in our area. After 6 months of treatments to my bikini, underarms, and lip, the results were amazing. Shortly After that, we purchased the Lumenis Lightsheer Desire laser for Renew.

This is what I’ve learned since then:

  • Laser hair removal isn’t for everyone- it doesn’t work for red, blonde, or grey hair, but works great on all shades of brown and black hair.

  • It’s not for tanned skin - it can cause burning or skin pigmentation issues on tanned skin

  • It hurts, like someone is flicking your skin with a rubber band or pulling off a band aid - but the more treatments you have and the more hair that you lose, the less painful it becomes.

  • It lasts for a long time but not always forever - there are occasional touch ups that may be needed over time because of the way that hormones work and hair follicles grow. They’re usually infrequent, but they do happen.

  • It’s amazing - literally the best thing that has ever happened to me! Not having to shave or deal with skin irritation or razor bumps for over a year - I’ll take it and would do it again and again to reap the benefits!
